According to a self proclaimed expert, yes.
One of the most popular genres amongst women- romance and romantic comedy books, have never kept my interest as a reader. The plots feel copy and pasted to me, each trope just restructured to fit characters a little different from the last. The cliche dialogues and one liners are what really get to me I think- but I digress.
If this feeling is familiar to you or maybe you just have a less than romantic life at the moment, I want to suggest and introduce a personal favorite genre of mine. Break Up Books. This isn’t ground breaking by any means but I’ve curated a list of titles that is full of funny stories, revenge stricken characters and free of cliches. You can thank me later.
“The Beach Boy”
By Ottessa Moshfegh
You will be left with a feeling of “is that all there is?” Moshfegh is such a brilliant writer that will have you blurring feelings of grief, betrayal and disappointment all at once. You will put this book down feeling insulted.
“Acts of Desperation”
By Meg Nolan
Imagine getting the love letter you thought you’d never receive. Now you’re touching a hot stove while you read it. Does that make sense?
“And I Do Not Forgive You”
By Amber Sparks
This collection of fictional short stories takes place in trailer parks, princes castles and abandoned apartment buildings. Unique accounts of love, tragedy and fantasy all centering on one common theme: revenge.
“Why Men Love Bitches”
By Sherry Argov
I will admit I have a lot of criticisms of this book. However I think most of the advice to women dating in the 21st century, this is almost integral to successful relationships. It’s not about appeasing men but it is about how to have successful relationships with them. Modern dating has encouraged women that they don’t need boundaries in romantic relationships. Argov reminds women they do.
“Thirst For Salt”
By Madeline Lucas
Melancholy but lovely, this both is a love story and it isn’t. And isn’t that what life feels like sometimes? A story about a relationship with a big age gap, takes place in a quiet Australian coastal town.
“Attached”
By Amir Levine
Because maybe you are the problem. There is nothing wrong with a bit of self introspection at any point rather you’re single or not. I know:( How blase! But this book is extremely insightful with great advice for those who are trying to improve their personal life.
“The Pisces”
By Melissa Broder
Ohh I wish I could read this one for the first time again! It’s not too often you can pick up a book that sincerely has you audibly laughing in the library, but que the judgemental looks. Hilarious realistic fiction with a fantasy element. Yes I know that totally contradicts itself and I am pretty spot on with this description.
I certainly feel this list could be longer but I will give your TBR list a breather. I Hope I’ve convinced you to consider something heartbreaking for your next read.
